End Child Bride Project is an initiative of WOYODEV funded by Mundo Coperante aimed at identifying and supporting vulnerable young girls between ages of 8 to 18 across 16 local governments of Kwara State who have or likely to be faced with child marriage. Kwara State, located in North Central Nigeria has been identified as one of the States in Nigeria with high rate of child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation practice.
WOYODEV intervention End Child Bride project is made up of diverse components which includes but not limited to advocacy/sensitization to community, local and state structures, community dialogue, capacity building for local government caretaker committee, and provision of support services to enrolled children, there is also policy awareness and policy advocacy component which saw WOYODEV produced a concise Policy Brief on Child Marriage and simplified National Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law for wide dissemination among development stakeholders and policy makers.
At the inception of the project, WOYODEV built the capacity of Civil Society and Community Based Organization actors how to better engage in the campaign and also created awareness on the dangers inherent in the practice of child marriage.
So far, the project has identified 6000 vulnerable young adolescents and girls across 16 Local Government if Kwara State comprising of three senatorial zones and has provided direct support to upto 250 girls via enrollment/ re-enrolment back to schools, skill acquisiotn and apprentice learning support.
Modalities for selection of direct beneficiaries include some set of criteria put up by WOYODEV and also from recommendations through information provided by community leaders and stakeholders in communities.
